Periodontitis: Small cause - big effect.
A very common cause of tooth loss is periodontitis (more commonly known as inflammation of the gums or gingivitis). Gingivitis is a common disease that affects about 30% of the population. The causes are diverse: poor oral hygiene, smoking, medication use and genetic disposition.
What may seem "normal" is anything but harmless: Once the bacteria from soft and hard plaque have spread over your teeth, pockets form at the gingival margin, which in turn can lead to serious periodontal and gum damage. This typically results in the loss of one or even several teeth.
And we now know: inflammation of the gums and periodontium can also greatly impact overall health. Periodontitis, for example, is suspected of increasing the risk of contracting other diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes or pneumonia.
Our goal when treating your gums at the Lindeman dental practice is therefore to work together with you to keep an eye on your overall health.
Our holistic approach to treatment includes a periodontitis risk test, professional tooth cleaning (PTC), to which we regularly ask you to come (recall), and home dental care instructions, as well as precise and gentle laser treatment that is largely free of pain and kills germs, meaning that the use of antibiotics can be generally avoided.
